Construction Mortar Troubleshooting – Sagging, Cracking & Water Retention

Symptom -> cause -> cellulose ether adjustment

Most dry-mix mortar problems trace back to the water balance and the cellulose ether grade. We have laid it out as symptom, likely cause and the adjustment to try, so a formulator can narrow a fault fast.

Sagging on the wall

Sagging usually means viscosity build is too low for the layer thickness, or dosage is short – move up a grade or raise dose and re-check.

Cracking after set

Cracking after set often points to water leaving too fast (retention too low) so the cement never fully hydrated, or an over-flexible/over-retarded system.

Poor water retention and chalky surface

A chalky, powdery, weak surface is the classic low-water-retention signature on an absorbent substrate.

When to talk to an engineer

Every mortar and every site is a little different, so if a fault will not resolve on paper, contact us for formulation support – technical questions are answered in writing, normally within one working day. Non-standard specifications are reviewed directly with the plant, so a request gets a clear feasibility answer rather than being left open.
