HPMC for Wall Putty & Skim Coat – Workability & Sag Resistance

What putty and skim-coat makers ask for

Wall putty and skim coats are thin, wide and unforgiving: any loss of water to the wall shows up as poor workability, drag under the knife and a chalky, powdery finish. HPMC is the additive that keeps the film open, smooth and sag-resistant long enough to work it flat.

How HPMC controls water retention and workability

The mechanism is water retention plus lubrication. HPMC holds mixing water so the gypsum or cement binder cures properly rather than drying out at the surface, and it gives the paste the light, smooth feel that a plasterer reads as quality. Sag resistance comes from the grade’s viscosity build – too low and it slumps, too high and it drags – so the grade is matched to the filler system.

Dosage and grade selection

Every viscosity comes in both NDJ and Brookfield, always with the test conditions – concentration, temperature, spindle and speed – so the number you check on arrival matches the one we shipped against. Recommended dosage sits in a typical range for putty, but the exact percentage depends on your calcium/cement/filler mix and is best confirmed on your line. (Application dosage percentages are shown as a band; supplier-specific loadings are confirmed on request.)
