Where industrial PVA is used
In construction additives it improves bond and film formation in putties and mortars, and pairs with RDP in exterior insulation systems. In adhesives and paints it contributes body, film and stability. It also serves as a textile sizing agent and a protective colloid in emulsion polymerisation.

Choosing by hydrolysis degree
Across all of these, the hydrolysis degree and viscosity grade decide behaviour: solubility, film strength and water resistance all move with it. Match the grade to the job rather than to a habit. In practice that means partially hydrolysed grades such as 17-88 and 24-88, chosen for easier cold-water solubility, and fully hydrolysed grades such as 17-99 and 24-99, chosen for stronger, more water-resistant films.
