What a gypsum plaster maker needs from a cellulose ether

A gypsum plaster needs its cellulose ether to do two things at the same time: hold the mixing water so the plaster cures properly instead of drying out against an absorbent background, and do it without disturbing the fast set that gypsum is known for. Our HPMC and HEMC grades for gypsum are chosen to strike exactly that balance.

Water retention and set behaviour

High water retention keeps the plaster workable and prevents the powdery, weak surface that comes from premature drying, while the grade is picked so it does not over-retard or destabilise the set. HEMC’s higher gel temperature again helps in warm application conditions.

Grade band and dosage

Every viscosity comes in both NDJ and Brookfield, always with the test conditions – concentration, temperature, spindle and speed – so the number you check on arrival matches the one we shipped against. Dosage is shown as a band and confirmed on your formulation.
